Second grade has been learning about the magnificent insect world and its importance in our life. They have studied how honey bees and monarch caterpillars go through metamorphoses and play a vital role to the circle of life. Community guest, Zack Patton, taught students that pollination from these insects helps produce fruit such as apples. He spoke of Johnny Appleseed and about the importance of protecting our bees and planting trees to help sustain these insects and their role in our lives. Patton brought his old fashioned apple press with him to further enrich the lesson. Students had the chance to crush and press the apples, and they soon realized that making apple cider require lots of hard work. This experience made quite an impression on our second graders.
