On May 17th, Dr. Doody and Mr. Armstrong took eight students (pictured from left to right Hunter Guthrie, Ashley Cumberledge, Colton Anderson, Gavin Scott, Joey Reed, Amber Finch, Savannah Milliken, and Noah Zimmerman) to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) sponsored by Intel and several other technology, engineering, and science companies. Over 5 million dollars in prizes were awarded to hundreds of students representing 78 different countries from around the world. Many of the students competing in ISEF represented their countries by dressing in cultural heritage costume, which added to the grandeur of the event. Last year, ISEF was held in Hollywood, CA and next year will move to Phoenix, AZ so this was indeed a rare opportunity for West Greene students. This trip to ISEF was a result of Dr. Doody’s invitation to present a symposium on a lab she helped develop with Flinn scientific and Beyond Benign: Making Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells using Blackberries. Ashley Cumberledge, Amber Finch, and Savannah Milliken assisted in the symposium by helping the participants build their dye-sensitized solar cells. Perhaps the next trip to ISEF will result from West Greene student competing in the fair!
