This morning our 2nd grade students had the privilege of hearing the story, "The Christmas Tea" written by two local authors, Mrs. Diane Toothman and Mrs. Susan Aul. They shared their inspiration for writing this story. "After a day of browsing for new fabric, for a relaxing afternoon of sewing, they opened up the door of the car and they found a mouse that had been along for the ride." The story is from perspectives of mice having a Christmas tea celebration with baking and sewing. The students even got to hear the new story Mrs. Toothman and Mrs. Aul are currently in the process of publishing! Thank you Mrs. Toothman and Mrs. Aul for bringing this story to life for our 2nd graders and for inspiring them to possibly become authors one day too. A special thanks to the West Greene Elementary Parent Organization for purchasing a copy of "The Christmas Tea" for each 2nd grader.

Reading the Story
So excited for their new autographed book!
Reading their new books
West Greene High School's National Honor Society students read their favorite children's book to 2nd graders to model fluent reading. Both high school and elementary students had a blast getting to know each other, reading, and reviewing the story. This activity was called the "Starbooks Review". After listening to the children's book, the elementary students discussed the book and completed the Starbooks Review activity page. There were conversations about the setting, their favorite characters, and their favorite part of the story. Lastly, the students decorated a Starbooks cup and rated the book. Our National Honor Society students did a fantastic job modeling fluent reading and asking questions for deeper thinking of the stories read. Thank you Mr. Armstrong for your collaboration for this buddy reading activity.

After a mini-lesson reviewing the meanings of 50 common words to describe an author’s tone, students in ELA 10 engaged in a tone tussle today. Based on the card game of War, students had to judge the intensity of meaning for each word, with the winner of each hand as the person with the most positive tone word. Judging from the smiles and the overhead conversations during the game, students had lots of fun and learning!

Students in Language Arts 12 completed a digital escape room as a review activity connected to the reading of Geoffrey Chaucer's, "The Pardoner's Tale." Working together in small groups, they had 40 minutes to figure out the given clues and escape to complete the challenge. Not all groups were able to escape, but they did give it a good try.

Members of the Youth Traffic Safety Council attended a meeting with schools from around the tri-County area. Among the focus topics, they had the opportunity to try their hand at checking tire pressures and tread depth. Each was also gifted a tire pressure gauge of their own to help them maintain their own tire pressures. They also heard a first hand experience from a woman involved in a vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a motorcycle operator. #DriveSafelyWG #LookTwiceSaveALife #RoutineMaintenance

To kick off National School Counseling Week (February 6-10), the WPIAL and Dunkin’ have teamed up to highlight the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve academic, social, and athletic success, as well as plan for a career. Anyone within the WPIAL network of member high schools is invited to nominate a high school counselor who has made a profound impact on their school and student body. The WPIAL High School Counselor of the Year will receive free coffee for a year at Dunkin’ (HRG locations) and will be honored at the WPIAL Baseball Championships at the Washington Wild Things’ Wild Things Park on May 30 or May 31. Nominating your favorite counselor is as easy as scanning the QR code! Schools with the highest participation will be given the opportunity for a Dunkin’ Day, where representatives of Dunkin’ will come to your school to hand out promotional materials, coupons, and even donuts (if approved)! Use the attached “Counselor of the Year Flyer” for your electronic and/or physical bulletin boards to help spread the word to your staff and student body. Nominations will close on April 10, 2023. Dunkin’ is always looking for top-notch talent to help deliver on the promise of fast, friendly service in their welcoming and booming Western Pennsylvania locations. As part of the partnership, the WPIAL asks that you forward along this email to counselors to make them aware of the nomination opportunity as well as the exciting employment opportunities for students looking for a part-time job.
